April PSBA Meeting

Master Beekeeper Dawn Beck at our April PSBA meeting

Tracy opened the meeting at 6:30 with a question and answer period, and there are a lot of questions with this season heating up, pollin flowing!

Later, past president and Master Beekeeper Dawn Beck gave a good talk on one of the most important issues for beekeepers at this time of year: Swarms and Splits. Why so important? One of the top reasons is that swarms have a fairly poor chance of survival, but by watching out for and tending to the colony's urge to swarm--not enough space, not enough pheromones, food, etc--you can actually use the urge to your advantage. More bees and more honey. Jeff Steenburgen is leading a hive check on May 24th in the Apiary which is focused on swarms and splits--space is limited so sign up early

Later, David Feinberg discussed the topic of Double Queening which is a fairly labor intensive process for intermediate to advanced beekeepers, but the resulting honey harvests is amazing. The process also reduces swarming and creates a healthy environment for the colony.

Speaking of swarms...

Tis the season. To find out more about swarms, see the list and learn about how you can help neighbors and friends if a swarm should grace their property, please read more here.
